Sarah Sanders exits White House after turbulent two years defending Trump

He says Sanders will be returning to her home state of Arkansas and has not immediately named a successor. "I know he is going to have an incredible six more years and get a whole lot more done", she said.

She started out as deputy press secretary before replacing Sean Spicer in the top post in July 2017.

"This has been the honor of a lifetime, the opportunity of a lifetime". She wants to spent time with her family and three young children.

Huckabee Sanders now joins 20 other government officials who have either been fired by the president or exited of their own volition.

Sanders evolved into a senior adviser and confidante of the president, one who is regularly brought into senior-level meetings.

As press secretary, Ms Huckabee-Sanders was contradicted by elements of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report into Russian influence in the 2016 election.

She has also been accused of telling lies to reporters, although she denies this. The last White House briefing was more than 90 days ago. Sanders said, smiling at the president.
