The suspects involved in the shooting of former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz got paid $7,800 for the hit, according to authorities; Steve Harrigan reports from Santo Domingo.

Officials declined to address what the motive for the shooting might have been, but said the suspects carried out the attack on Ortiz for about $400,000 Dominican Pesos, just shy of $8,000.

The gun reportedly used in the shooting, a Browning Hi Power semi-automatic pistol, was later found by authorities at another suspect's home.

Dominican officials identified the suspected gunman as Rolfy Ferreyra Cruz, 25, and said he has been detained, along with four suspected accomplices. Ortiz is one of the most beloved figures in sports history in the Dominican Republic and Boston, a fearsome power hitter with a ready smile.

David Ortiz remains in guarded condition as he continues to "heal and make progress" at a hospital in Boston, his wife, Tiffany Ortiz, said in a statement released Thursday by the Boston Red Sox.

But they say he had help: New surveillance video shows a meeting between the suspects in two cars, and the accused motorcycle driver, Eddy Garcia, near the bar before the ambush.

"Ortiz, affectionately known as Big Papi, was shot inside the Dial Lounge and Bar". He was identified by police as Luis Alfredo Rivas Clase, who also goes by the nickname "The Surgeon".

Afterward, police conducted "an exhaustive investigation" and examined video surveillance that showed the shooter running toward the Hyundai and reuniting with the people inside the auto.

The document also said the two men were seen on security camera footage talking with other people in the Accent and another Hyundai in a nearby street before the shooting at 9:20pm on Sunday.

Days after David Ortiz was shot in the Dominican Republic, his daughter, Alexandria Ortiz, took to social media Wednesday to express her gratitude for the support her family has received while her father recovers. Witnesses captured at least one man, beat him and waited until police arrived to scoop him up to jail.

Deivi Solano, one of Féliz Garcia's attorneys, said his client is a motorcycle taxi driver and may have unwittingly driven the shooter, but he did not shoot Ortiz.

The murder rate stands at 12.5 killings per 100,000 people, placing the Dominican Republic in the top 10% to 15% of the most violent countries, according to the U.S. State Department.
