David Ortiz Recovering In Boston After Sunday Shooting

Former baseball star David Ortiz wounded in Dominican Republic shooting

David Ortiz, baseball legend, shot at Dominican Republic bar

Ortiz spokesman Leo López told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Ortiz is expected to stay in intensive care for at least 48 hours.

Boston Red Sox icon Ortiz was flown to Boston on Monday after his former team paid for an air ambulance to ferry him back to the United States. Fans honored Ortiz with posters, T-shirts, and messages of support. "We ask for privacy as David works towards recovery".

Ortiz was shot Sunday night while seated in Dial Discotheque, a popular night club in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He is now recovering and "resting comfortably" in a Boston hospital, and took his first steps since his surgeries on Tuesday afternoon.

Police say the second suspect is still in the wind, although ESPN Deportes, citing a source close to the investigation, reported that the man on the cycle with Garcia is now in custody, too.

Julieta Tejeda, a spokeswoman for the national prosecutor's office in the Dominican Republic, acknowledged the arrest to a group of journalists on WhatsApp Tuesday night.

One suspect, 25-year-old Eddy Feliz Garcia, faced a judge Tuesday night on a charge of accomplice to attempted murder. The bullet exited Ortiz's stomach.

Garcia was beaten to a pulp by bystanders following the shooting and then handed over to police. The gunman has not been arrested, and police said they do not yet have a motive. Leo Ortiz told local media he had no idea why his son would have been targeted.

Dr. Abel Gonzalez, who performed the surgery, said part of Ortiz's intestines and liver were removed. The veteran manager added that Ortiz "could light up a room" with his personality but also worked hard at his craft and was a team leader.
