A flight from Manchester was delayed for nearly eight hours when a confused passenger opened an emergency exit after mistaking it for the toilet door.

The Pakistan International Airlines flight PK702 was due to leave Manchester at 9.20pm on Friday.

"As per standard operating procedure, the PIA had to offload almost 40 passengers and their luggage", the spokesperson clarified. The airline and Manchester airport confirmed the details of the incident.

A passenger on a Pakistan-bound plane accidentally opened the emergency exit door when looking for the toilet.

An inquiry into the incident has been launched by PIA. The Independent reports that deploying an emergency slide is no small (or cheap) occurrence: it costs an airline anywhere between US$6,000 and $30,000 whenever one is inflated. Luckily, this appears to have happened while the plane was being boarded while on the tarmac, and not mid-flight.
