Qatar to stage back-to-back Club World Cups

Liverpool News Will Liverpool take part in Club World cup after Champions League triumph

Qatar will host Club World Cup in December 2019 and December 2020 to test readiness for 2022 World Cup

A meeting was held in Paris on Monday, where Qatar were confirmed as the hosts for the 2019 and 2020 editions of the tournament.

FIFA's decision to "award" Qatar the tournament for both 2019 and 2020 came despite previous reports that it wouldn't even be held, and is an unexpected development for Liverpool.

The decision to give Qatar the Club World Cup comes two weeks after Federation Internationale de Football Association settled on 32 countries for the 2022 World Cup rather than expanding to 48 teams.

However, this has been opposed by the European Club Association (ECA) which wrote to FIFA president Gianni Infantino in March to say that its members would not take part because there is no space in the worldwide calendar.

It said its administration would approach potential hosts for the expanded edition of the club tournament before making a recommendation at the next council meeting in Shanghai on October 23 and 24. Fans of other continental champions are also expected to reach in thousands for the two-week tournament for which the dates and venues will be announced by the Local Organizing Committee after the summer break.

The last Club World Cup was held in late 2018 in the neighbouring United Arab Emirates.
