Juwan Howard got emotional before he said his first word.
Howard is replacing John Beilein - the Wolverines' winningest coach in program history after 12 seasons - who's off to coach the Cleveland Cavaliers. And he stepped up to the podium, he said he was crying "tears of joy" about his new job. And that was to bring a championship to this university - a university that I care so much about. That's why he was hired. I'm back. I'm back to help continue this MI tradition. After going separate ways after college, the "Fab Five" are reportedly going to reunite to rally around Howard.
"First of all, let me be clear", Manuel said. Moments later, he was formally introduced as Michigan's basketball coach.
Howard was the fifth overall pick in the 1994 NBA Draft after forgoing his senior season with the Wolverines.
The 46-year-old Howard explains he didn't mean to cry, but being the head coach of MI matters so much to him.

"I was very surprised", Manuel said.
Howard called his new position a "dream job".
New Minnesota Timberwolves president of basketball operations Gersson Rosas spent less than a week evaluating the head coach candidate landscape before landing back on the Wolves' interim head coach, Ryan Saunders, as the man for the permanent job.
"It had to be about 6:45 a.m.", he said.
Manuel said his checklist for Beilein's replacement included factors such as having high integrity, great character and being a proven victor. He played for the Wolverines from 1991 to 1994 and spent 19 years in the National Basketball Association, winning back-to-back championships with the Miami Heat in 2012 and 2013.

"All these things about, 'He hasn't coached a game, ' 'What is Warde doing?'" Manuel said, "I'm (going to) take that risk, I'm (going to) take that challenge".
But now, the Wolverines have two high profile coaches who played the respective sports they're coaching. Manuel said the program was open to exploring ways in which it could honor that group, but he said pulling down the banners was a university decision.
That's where the questions remain about Howard.
That's an admirable vision, but also one that's tough to quantify in May.
Former Saint Joseph's coach Phil Martelli reportedly has an offer to join Howard's staff.
