Expedition 59 commander Oleg Kononenko and fellow cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin stepped out of the space station at 11:42 a.m. and returned about 6 hours later to close the hatch at 5:43 p.m. after completing the spacewalk, which was being live streamed on NASA's YouTube channel.

A pair of Russian cosmonauts completed a spacewalk on Wednesday to retrieve science experiments and carry out maintenance on the International Space Station.

Wednesday's spacewalk will be the 217th that will support station assembly, maintenance, and upgrades to the Space Station. This is the fourth spacewalk happening outside of the Space Station this year as well. Ovchinin will have his first spacewalk today, while Kononenko, who is now commanding the Expedition 59 mission at the Space Station, will walk outside the orbiting laboratory for the fifth time. Today's EVA will be the first spacewalk for Ovchinin, who will assume command of the orbiting lab next month after Kononenko returns to Earth.

For the spacewalk, the two attached stickers to their spacesuits paying tribute to Alexei Leonov, a legendary Russian Federation cosmonaut who became the first human to walk in space on March 18, 1965.
