Huawei says it is reviewing its relationship with courier service FedEx after packages intended for addresses in Asia were redirected to the USA without explanation.

A Huawei company logo is seen at the security exhibition in Shanghai, China May 24, 2019.

Reuters could not verify the authenticity of the records. He said that the company did not receive a (government) order and refused to comment on the courier record.

A representative from Huawei said that the packages contained only documents and "no technology". It's unclear what that referred to, and FedEx hasn't elaborated, but it could mean any number of events that interrupt a package's delivery, including a holiday, a customs delay or a lack of recipient at the delivery site, according to the company's website.

A spokesperson for Huawei's USA division confirmed to El Reg that, indeed, its packages were misrouted, adding: "Huawei is in the process of reviewing our logistics and document deliver support requirements".

"Please be informed that FDX SG received notification from FDX US to hold and return the package to US".

The US recently placed Huawei onto an "entities list" over claims the company is an espionage threat due to alleged ties with the Chinese government. The packages found their way to FedEx's headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee. "We are aware of all shipments at issue and are working directly with our customers to return the packages to their possession". Although both Huawei and the Chinese government have denied the claims, and despite that, the United States has yet to produce any actual proof, Washington has begun to enforce a ban against the company, encouraging governments around the world to follow suit.

The issue has become a flashpoint in an escalating trade battle between the world's two biggest economies.

The company said that FedEx diverted two parcels sent from Japan and addressed to its offices in China, instead sending them to the U.S., and attempted to divert two more packages sent from Vietnam to offices elsewhere in Asia.

The Chinese telecoms giant said that FedEx had also attempted to reroute two other packages from Hanoi in Vietnam destined for Huawei's offices in Hong Kong and Singapore.

FedEx did not provide an explanation for what the "delivery exception" was in this case.

Huawei told Reuters that both Vietnam packages were sent by its shipping agent, a contractor that Huawei did not identify. The company also said that FedEx also tried to reschedule the shipping routes of another two parcels. Reuters could not confirm that.
