Trump directs AG Barr to declassify data on what prompted Russiagate probe

BREAKING Trump Approves Declassification of Documents Related to 2016 Election Spying

Breaking: President Trump issues important order about declassification of documents from FISA abuse probe

The move marks an escalation in Trump's efforts to "investigate the investigators", as he continues to try to undermine the findings of special counsel Robert Mueller's inquiry amid mounting Democratic calls to bring impeachment proceedings.

"Outstanding-President Trump authorizing the Attorney General to declassify documents related to surveillance during the 2016 election".

He was likely alluding to intelligence agencies surveilling Trump campaign foreign policy adviser Carter Page, who was the subject of several FISA warrants.

By giving Barr the authority to declassify documents, Trump is going over the heads of the intelligence agency chiefs, many of whom have made no secret of their disagreements with the president.

"We're exposing everything", Trump said.

"While Trump stonewalls the public from learning the truth about his obstruction of justice, Trump and Barr conspire to weaponize law enforcement and classified information against their political enemies", Schiff said on Twitter.

The president said his decision will ensure that investigators looking into the origins of the probe have everything they need, "so they'll be able to see how and why this whole hoax started".

"I am confident that the Attorney General will work with the [intelligence community] in accordance with the long-established standards to protect highly-sensitive classified information that, if publicly released, would put our national security at risk", Coats said.

Barr's new mission comes days after he announced the appointment of a USA attorney to investigate the dubious origins of the government's surveillance of Trump campaign associates.

In a directive, Mr. Trump ordered the C.I.A. and the country's 15 other intelligence agencies to cooperate with the review and granted Mr. Barr the authority to unilaterally declassify their documents.

"The coverup has entered a new and risky phase", Schiff said in a statement released late Thursday.

"I am reviewing the conduct of the investigation and trying to get my arms around the aspects of the counterintelligence investigation that was conducted in the summer of 2016", Barr testified on April 9. He is expected to focus on the period before November 7, 2016-including the use of Federal Bureau of Investigation informants as well as alleged improper issuance of Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrants. The Justice Department's watchdog, the Office of the Inspector General, is also examining the genesis of the Russian Federation probe.

A number of Republican lawmakers have been calling on President Trump to make this move for over a year.

California Rep. Adam Schiff, chairman of the House intelligence committee, called Trump's decision "un-American".
