James Gunn Shares His Hopes For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

James Gunn says he thought career 'was over' after Disney firing

James Gunn helped make some of the MCU's strangest oddballs into a multi-film hit as the director and writer of the Guardians of the Galaxy films, but after an online controversy led to his firing, hiring by comic rival DC, and eventual reinstatement by Disney, he's nearly more familiar for the drama around him than for the drama he creates on screen. Perhaps Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could have him grappling with his tragic past as an experiment, or have him gain a love interest as has been theorized by fans. "I know that people have been hurt by things that I've said, and that's still my responsibility, that I wasn't as compassionate as I should be in what I say", he said. He had the full support of many of his colleagues, including the Guardians cast members. Disney has since rehired the director in March. In the interim, Warner Bros. hired him to work on Suicide Squad 2, and then Disney rehired him to discuss Guardians 3. I guess it was a possibility for a while, but the initial conversations with Alan (Horn, Disney film chief) weren't, 'Let's figure out if I should come back.' It was, 'Let's talk about this.' It was like the break-up of my marriage. I was touched by his compassion. "You hear in Hollywood that everybody's cutthroat".

"James is likely not the last good person to be put on trial".

Gunn likened the experience to a painful divorce, a situation with which he is familiar. "I certainly haven't been flawless in my spiritual journeys since that time, but I have been better". "There were some problems, and we just weren't supposed to be married, but it was well worth living that six years with my ex", he said.

He apologised at the time and said he took full responsibility. But I would hate to look back on the six years that my wife and I were together and think, "Oh, what a waste of time". "But I just wanted to be comfortable saying goodbye and splitting up, and that's where my head was at". It happened, and suddenly it seemed like everything was gone.

Whatever actually happens, I just beg that James Gunn lets my Rocket Raccoon live. "It felt as if my career was over". Disney totally had the right to fire me. "There have been other hard days in my life, from the time I got sober when I was younger, to the death of friends who committed suicide".

He specifically details that Disney firing him felt like they had taken away his "hope for feeling love".

Gunn also talked about the "outpouring" of love he received from those around him after the firing. Sylvester Stallone FaceTime-ing me. And, of course, Dave Bautista, who came out so strong.

"That amount of love that I felt from my friends, my family, and the people in the community was absolutely overwhelming", said Gunn.

You might expect to Gunn to say he was looking forward to joking around with Chris Pratt, or exploring Gamora's character in the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, but for Gunn, it's all about Rocket, a character he feels so close to he says he "is me".

Gunn elaborated on feeling angry at himself for his past wrongdoing, adding that he now realizes that he has to do better in life.
