Hollywood A-lister Felicity Huffman admits role in U.S. college admissions scandal

Prosecutors recommend 4-month sentence for Felicity Huffman

At a federal court in Boston, Huffman admitted to slipping USD$15,000 (AUD$21,600) to William "Rick" Singer, who helped fabricate a college entrance exam score for Huffman's daughter. A source tells ET that Huffman appeared to fight back tears when she spoke to the judge on Monday, noting that her daughter always required extra time on her tests since her daughter was 11 years old. (Along with a $20,000 fine and 12 years' worth of supervision upon her release.) It's also possible that Huffman could end up getting no time at all; if she successfully argues that her crime accords with a lower guideline, she would only be sentenced to zero to six months behind bars. She was among 13 parents who have said they would plead guilty in the scam, reports CNN.

Lori Loughlin, on the other hand, has pled not guilty to the very same charges, as her attornies explained to her that they have a convincing case to thwart potential imprisonment. She was released on current bail conditions and will be sentenced on September 13. The Key Worldwide Foundation, whose purported mission was to help "underserved children" pursue an education, has since been exposed as Singer's vehicle for laundering payments from parents and paying bribes to college coaches, administrators and exam proctors.

The money was paid to a fake charity run by a college consultant who boosted her daughter Sofia's scores in a standardised test known as the SATs used for university admissions. Prosecutors said they would recommend four months in prison. He admitted to paying $250,000 to get his son into the University of Southern California as a fake water polo recruit.

"I had no knowledge of Mr. Singer paying Mr. Riddell", she said, "but everything else that Mr. Rosen said I did, I did".

Huffman was a star of the popular ABC series "Desperate Housewives", which won her an Emmy Award in 2005. Huffman was also nominated for an Oscar for playing a transgender woman in the movie "Transamerica".

Experts differ on whether Huffman's swift acceptance of responsibility will leave her with an acting career.

Singer recorded a number of conversations in which he and wealthy parents discussed these schemes, including a conversation with Huffman.

Felicity Huffman has pleaded guilty in connection to the U.S. college admissions cheating scandal case on Monday.
