Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage speaks at a press conference regarding the party's European Parliament election campaign in London

UK: Nigel Farage's Brexit Party leads EU election poll

Britain's two biggest parties endured a drubbing at the polls this month when voters expressed their frustration with the Brexit deadlock at local elections.

The battle among leading Conservatives to replace Theresa May as prime minister threatens to derail talks with the opposition Labour Party and the bid to find a Brexit compromise, Labour's John McDonnell said.

Labour Brexit spokesman Keir Starmer told Monday's Guardian newspaper his party would only support a deal if was put to a referendum vote.

He suggested a referendum on the final deal had become a red line of its own for many Labour MPs, saying "a significant number, probably 120 if not 150, would not back a deal if it hasn't got a confirmatory vote".

British Prime Minister Theresa May leaves 10 Downing Street in London, to attend Prime Minister's Questions at the Houses of Parliament, Wednesday, May 8, 2019.

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said this week would be "crunch week", adding that another public vote "would be a betrayal of what people voted for, and we want to implement the first referendum". "But let's see where these talks go to".

Even if these "Remain" parties stood a chance of winning seats in these elections, not only would it prevent an overall S&D majority, you can be sure they wouldn't help pass the progressive policies Labour are backing.

The better known Liberal Democrats, who are also campaigning on an anti-Brexit platform - with the somewhat contentious assistance of European Union politicians like Guy Verhofstadt - are faring somewhat better, but have not garnered even half the public support mustered by Mr Farage, sitting at 15 per cent.

"The opinion polls people are now looking at in the Tea Room are the opinion polls that say "never mind the European Union elections, whenever the general happens you are toast".

"This is a deliberate tactic being used by everybody else because they want to get away from having a proper debate about the extent of which our Brexit vote - and the promises made to us at the general election - have been betrayed". So we're at the flawless storm.

"The picture is most stark when we split out Leave and Remain voters - while 63% of Leavers say they will vote for the Brexit Party in the European elections, the most popular party among Remainers (still Labour) only has 31% versus 22% for the Lib Dems and 14% for the Greens".
