Staff found the three bodies - that of a man, 54, and two women aged 30 and 33 - alongside two crossbows. It is a rural hotel on the edge of Passau.

The three victims were all German citizens - a 53-year-old man and two women, aged 33 and 30.

Two of the weapons used in the killings were found on Saturday, while a third was found unused in a bag on Monday, according to police.

All three bodies had bolts inside them but police did not say how many.

The revelations began on Saturday morning when an employee at a quiet inn on the river Ilz near the southern German town of Passau discovered the bodies of two women and one man after repeated knocks on the door of their hotel room failed to get a response, the Associated Press reported. Merkur identified her only as "C" and said she had registered as an occupant of the flat in March.

Police haven't identified the victims, and their relationship isn't yet known.

The innkeeper told the paper that they hadn't booked breakfast but they had planned to stay for three nights.

The hotel has reopened for business after police announced there was no more evidence to find.

Crossbows can fire either bolts or short arrows.

The first results of an autopsy are expected on Tuesday.

A police spokesperson confirmed that the two corpses in Wittingen, Lower Saxony, had not been killed by crossbow bolts, "the modus operandi can not be compared".

German media say one sticker has the letters FMJ - believed to be a reference to Full Metal Jacket crossbow arrows made by a United States firm, Easton Hunting.

The group left an impression on other guests, with the man wearing a formal suit and sporting a long white beard and his female companions dressed entirely in black.
