Rangers rescued the 32-year-old man, who they say climbed over a metal guard rail overlooking the Kilauea caldera in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The unnamed man climbed over a metal railing at the Steaming Bluff overlook, lost his footing and fell from a 300-foot cliff at the caldera around 6:30 p.m. local time, National Park Service officials said in a statement.

The last fatal fall in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park occurred on October 29, 2017, officials said.

A man has been injured after he fell into the caldera of the Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island, according to officials. Continued explosive activity at the summit caused a months-long closure of the Kīlauea section of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The man was airlifted to Hilo Medical Center for treatment, the news release said.

"Visitors should never cross safety barriers, especially around risky and destabilised cliff edges", Broward said.

The man was initially listed in critical condition, but was upgraded to stable on Thursday, NPR said.
