Lyra McKee: Two Teenagers Released Without Charges After Killing of Northern Ireland Journalist

Detectives investigating the murder of Northern Irish journalist Lyra McKee have arrested a 57-year-old woman under the Terrorism Act in connection with the incident, police said Tuesday.

In a statement provided to the Irish News, using what the paper described as "a recognised codeword", the dissident republican organisation offered "full and honest apologies" to her family and friends.

The New IRA militant Irish nationalist group has apologized for the killing of journalist Lyra McKee - its first acknowledgement that one of its members was involved, the Irish News newspaper reported on Tuesday.

In the statement, the group, which formed in 2012 as an offshoot to the Irish Republican Army, claimed "volunteers" were deployed after British forces "provoked rioting".

'We have instructed our volunteers to take the utmost care in future when engaging the enemy, and put in place measures to help ensure this.

Both men were released without charges on Sunday, with no further information provided as to whether they were suspects or had been cleared of wrongdoing.

McKee, 29, was shot in the head late on Thursday by dissident republicans linked to the New IRA paramilitary group as they clashed with police in Northern Ireland's second city, also known as Derry.

On Monday a crowd gathered outside the Londonderry office of Saoradh, marking its walls with handprints of red paint in an act of protest.

The killing was condemned by all the major political parties as well as the prime ministers of Britain and Ireland.

Several republican groups have opposed Northern Ireland's peace process which culminated in the 1998 Good Friday agreement, ending decades of violent conflict.

Colum Eastwood said that Sinn Féin and the DUP had a responsibility to take the "poison out of politics" to find a solution to the political stalemate. Lyra, tragically, was a random victim and I need the public to continue to support us. "You don't shoot accidentally".

The group of friends have pledged to do more in Lyra's memory.
