Republican Bill Weld announces primary campaign against Donald Trump

A former MA governor is officially challenging President Trump for the 2020 Republican nomination-and it's not Mitt Romney. He added that he would be ashamed of himself if he didn't run.

Weld said his career as a federal prosecutor stands in stark contrast to the president.

No candidate that has gone up against an incumbent president has ever been successful at winning the nomination in the modern era, so Weld will face an uphill battle on his quest to unseat Trump.

"Ours is a nation built on courage, resilience, and independence". There is no greater cause on earth than to preserve what truly makes America great. Bill Weld, who was the Libertarian candidate for vice president in 2016, announced the longshot bid during a CNN appearance Monday, the Washington Post reports. "That's a real threat to us as a country", Weld said. "I am ready to lead that fight".

He said he is an economic conservative, adding that the United States "deserves to have some fiscal restraint and conservatism and cutting spending in Washington, DC".

On Monday, the former two-term governor boasted of his bipartisan record and ability to court independent voters. Trump, however, continues to perform extremely well in polls among Republicans, with poll after poll finding that around 9 in 10 Republicans approve of the job he's doing.

Mr Weld's campaign video touts his cross-party credentials as a Republican who was elected in the Democratic stronghold of MA.

Bill Weld announced on April 15, 2019, that he is officially entering the race for president, becoming the first Republican to challenge President Donald Trump in the 2020 race. They can choose President Trump, who has largely proven his conservative credentials on every issue but cutting the debt, or they can choose Bill Weld, a Republican who has effectively endorsed the very Democrat he was running against, a pro-abortion candidate who has compared Trump to Nazis, and a supporter of Barack Obama. The RNC and the Republican Party are firmly behind the president.

Party leaders have quickly rejected Weld's campaign which make things look hard for him in the long run.
