People are seeing haunting images of faces in the flames that engulfed Notre Dame on Monday night - with one photo apparently showing Jesus in the inferno.

Firefighters are still examining damage and shoring up the structure after the fire collapsed the cathedral's spire and destroyed the roof. It's literally the nucleus of Paris - all distances in France are measured from the esplanade in front of Notre Dame.

"That cathedral saw Paris grow". However, as per reports, the main structure including two bell towers have been saved by the firefighters. "And we can do it".

He said the restoration work will have to use new technology to rebuild the roof.

"Our history never stops and that we will always have trials to overcome", he said.

Even so, repairing the cathedral - including the wooden beams that made up its roof - presents problems.

Tusk, who chairs summits of EU national leaders, told lawmakers Tuesday that the blaze reminds Europeans of "how much we can lose".

It was not yet known what caused the blaze.

The Paris Prosecutor's office, which was investigating, said it was treating it as an accident.

"Nothing indicates this was a deliberate act", Heitz told reporters, adding that 50 investigators had been assigned to what he expected to be a "long and complex" case.

A public appeal for funds drew immediate support from French billionaires and other private donors, as well as from countries including Germany, Italy and Russian Federation, which offered expertise.

France will open the redesign of the Notre Dame cathedral's historic spire to global architects after Monday night's catastrophic blaze that gutted the oak-framed roof and sent the towering spire crashing through the vaulted ceiling.

But experts had warned a full restoration will take many years.

The Crown of Thorns, regarded as Notre-Dame's most sacred relic, was among the treasures quickly transported to safety, authorities said.
