Attorney general says 'I think spying did occur' on Trump's campaign

Top Democrat says Mueller will be called to testify to Congress — but with an important caveat

White House

Walton's ruling came as U.S. Attorney General William Barr, testifying in Congress on Tuesday, said he would deliver a redacted copy of Mueller's report to lawmakers "within a week".

Barr said he did not offer to let Mueller help draft his four-page March 24 letter to Congress on the conclusions of the special counsel's investigation.

Whatever portions of Robert Mueller's post-redacted report finally get released to the public in the coming week, they will not amount to the "complete and total exoneration" Donald Trump repeatedly promised they would.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., has been unequivocal in calls for access to the full work product from Mueller's office - not only his report but the testimony, intelligence and other material that supported his findings.

Attorney General William Barr was on Capitol Hill today for a public hearing.

In the meantime, Trump and his GOP allies will continue claiming that the Mueller report exonerates him - regardless of what's actually in it.

Another potential category that doesn't apply, Barr has said, is information covered by executive privilege; the president has in effect waived privilege. They are grand jury materials, information that USA spy agencies believe could reveal their sources or methods, information that could interfere with ongoing law enforcement investigations and information that touches on privacy or reputational interests of so-called peripheral individuals who weren't charged in the Russian Federation investigation. The reports said that some of the evidence against Trump was more damning than Barr's letter indicated. Rep. Jerrold Nadler, a New York Democrat and chairman of the House judiciary panel, confirmed the May 2 date on Twitter and said he would like Mueller to testify.

Attorney General William Barr declared Wednesday he thinks "spying did occur" on Donald Trump's presidential campaign, suggesting the origins of the Russian Federation investigation may have been mishandled and aligning himself with the president at a time when Barr's independence is under scrutiny.

"I don't intend at this stage to send the full, unredacted report to the committee", Barr said, adding that wouldn't ask a court to release grand jury material "Until someone shows me a provision" that allows it to be released.

Barr is appearing before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee one day after he testified before a House subcommittee and answered many - though not all - questions from lawmakers about the release of Mueller's almost 400 page report.

"I feel that I have an obligation to ensure government power was not abused", Barr said.

"The Democrats will never be satisfied, no matter what they get, how much they get, or how many pages they get", Trump tweeted Monday, two days after he blasted "Bob Mueller's team of 13 Trump Haters & Angry Democrats". He said that he had "some inkling as to some of the thinking of the special counsel" due to public reporting on indictments, etc. filed by Mueller.

"You're darn right I'm going after them again", Giuliani told the Associated Press of Mueller's team.
