Disney+, the media giant's highly anticipated streaming service, is set to launch in the U.S. on November 12, 2019 for $6.99 each month. That's well below the $13 monthly fee Netflix charges for its most popular streaming plan, signalling Disney's determination to woo subscribers as it vies to become a major player in a field that has turned "binge watching" into a common ritual.

Disney Plus will focus on family-friendly content, including a live action Star Wars series.

All Star Wars films can also be found on the streaming service within the first year, including a new spinoff series, The Mandalorian, directed by Jon Favreau.

Disney ended a lucrative licensing relationship with Netflix (NFLIX.O) in order to create the streaming service and faces challenges as it builds a service to compete with the entrenched streaming leaders.

That leaves them with about a 25% chance of jumping up to a top-four selection through the NBA's draft lottery on May 14. It was hard not to read into Davis' sartorial choices, as he has already reportedly requested a trade.

Disney will also contend with a new streaming service from Apple, which is expected to be released in the fall.

Disney+ will offer ad-free programming with a variety of original feature-length films, documentaries, live action and animated series and short-form content, along with unprecedented access to Disney's incredible library of film and television entertainment. The result was an ambush of familiar, beloved entertainment brands from Star Wars to Pixar to Marvel to The Simpsons-which, due to Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox, will now have its exclusive home on Disney+. But Disney+ is going to push several heroes into the spotlight.

At the launch, Disney+ will have the first two trilogies from Star Wars plus The Force Awakens and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. "We'll continue to enhance the user experience with a constant pipeline of high-quality programming, making the service even more appealing to consumers".

Following its U.S debut, Disney+ will rapidly expand globally, with plans to be in almost all major regions of the world within the next two years.

Disney kicked off its presentation to Wall Street analysts at its Burbank, California, headquarters on Thursday with a video that demonstrated the breadth of its portfolio, showing clips from dozens of classic TV shows and movies from Frozen and The Lion King to Avatar and The Sound of Music.

Disney is betting its new service will quickly offset that.

By hour three, when Agnes Chu, senior vice president of content at Disney+, boldly stated that Disney+ is "the only streaming service that at its foundation has this breadth of storytelling for a global audience", it was hard not to agree. As it stands, some of Hulu's original series are already on Canadian streaming services, such as the filmed-in-Toronto The Handmaid's Tale, which is available on Bell's Crave platform. It expects Disney Plus to be profitable during its 2024 fiscal year. It remains to be seen when it will come to Canada and other countries.
