"These results are consistent with current dietary recommendations", says study author Fang Fang Zhang, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor in the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. It will even be price exploring whether or not dietary supplements is likely to be useful amongst those that have dietary deficiencies."With greater than half of US adults utilizing dietary supplements, Zhang and her colleagues explored their results, in addition to the impression of vitamins present in meals, with knowledge from 27,725 adults collaborating within the Nationwide Well being and Diet Examination Survey".

The new study, however, says there's not much evidence that supplements of any sort can prolong your life, despite their widespread use.

Moreover, during those six years of study, 3,613 participants had died.

Another study has warned that vitamin supplements probably aren't an adequate substitute for a poor diet - and, in fact, at least one popular supplement may increase cancer death risk. Those that mentioned that they had used dietary supplements had been requested for particulars, together with how typically they took the merchandise.

Excess calcium intake in the context of this study was defined as doses exceeding 1,000 mg a day. These deaths included 945 deaths from cardiovascular disease and 805 deaths from cancer.

In addition, there was evidence that unnecessary consumption of vitamin D supplements by individuals who were not deficient in the vitamin might increase the risk of death from any cause.

Still, the researchers noted that they didn't objectively measure what participants consumed, but instead relied on their self reports, which may not be entirely accurate. Intake of vitamin A, vitamin K, magnesium, zinc and copper at recommended levels was associated with a reduction in all-cause or cardiovascular mortality, but only when those nutrients were obtained from food. Finally, to calculate mortality outcomes for each study participant, matches were made with the National Death Index through December 31, 2011. However, excess calcium was linked to an increase risk of cancer mortality.

Researchers also found that taking dietary supplements did not affect the risk of death of individuals with low nutrient intake. However, this link requires further investigation to be definitively proved as a positive association. Additionally, the possibility that residual confounding may have affected the study's results remains.

Zhang says a few populations may benefit from certain supplements, including the elderly - who often struggle to absorb nutrients from food - and those with dietary restrictions that may lead to deficiencies. While certain nutrients may contribute to a longer life, they need to come from a food source, the study found.
