Still, the researchers noted that they didn't objectively measure what participants consumed, but instead relied on their self reports, which may not be entirely accurate. Intake of vitamin A, vitamin K, magnesium, zinc and copper at recommended levels was associated with a reduction in all-cause or cardiovascular mortality, but only when those nutrients were obtained from food. Finally, to calculate mortality outcomes for each study participant, matches were made with the National Death Index through December 31, 2011. However, excess calcium was linked to an increase risk of cancer mortality.

Researchers also found that taking dietary supplements did not affect the risk of death of individuals with low nutrient intake. However, this link requires further investigation to be definitively proved as a positive association. Additionally, the possibility that residual confounding may have affected the study's results remains.

Zhang says a few populations may benefit from certain supplements, including the elderly - who often struggle to absorb nutrients from food - and those with dietary restrictions that may lead to deficiencies. While certain nutrients may contribute to a longer life, they need to come from a food source, the study found.
