Jussie Smollett Faces Civil Lawsuit That Could Get Him Fired From 'Empire'

Earlier on Thursday, President Donald Trump had tweeted that the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice will "review the outrageous Jussie Smollett case in Chicago".

Although prosecutors dropped the charges "after reviewing all of the facts and circumstances of the case", Trump called for a federal investigation into the issue.

In the letter to Smollett's attorneys by the City of Chicago and signed by Corporation Counsel Ed Siskel, the city said that it "may prosecute (Smollett) for making a false statement to the city".

The president's son, Donald Trump Jr., has tweeted and retweeted messages about the case 25 times since the decision to drop the charges was announced on March 26 (Tuesday).

Cook County prosecutors had said Smollett forfeited his $10,000 bond to the City of Chicago.

The City of Chicago and the Chicago Police Department intend on suing actor Jussie Smollett if he does not pay the $130K for the cost of the investigation into his allegations that he was a victim of a racist and homophobic hate crime.

Police charge Smollett, who is African-American and gay, paid two brothers - Abel and Ola Osundairo - to stage the January 29th attack in downtown Chicago in an attempt to boost his career. "Over two dozen detectives and police officers participated in the investigation, ultimately spending weeks investigating your false claims, including a substantial number of overtime hours". The actor's legal team reportedly already rejected the letter, saying Smollett's the one who's owed an apology from the Mayor and the Chicago PD superintendent.
