A large truck slammed into a crowd gathered on a dark highway in western Guatemala, killing 18 people and leaving bodies scattered on the roadway, firefighters said Thursday.

The truck struck a group of people who had gone onto the road to inspect another person who had been hit by a vehicle, Cecilio Chacaj, a spokesman for the local fire department, told Reuters.

Guatemala launched a manhunt on Thursday after 18 indigenous Guatemalans were killed in a hit-and-run by a truck driver who fled the scene.

The truck was apparently travelling without its headlights on.

"It seems that the semi-trailer did not notice the number of the people on the roadway and ran them over", Cecilio Chacaj said.

The alleged driver of the yellow-striped black and white vehicle was identified as 28-year-old Pedro Rene Lorenzo Lopez. "I express my condolences", Morales wrote on Twitter. We are now coordinating actions on providing assistance to the victims' relatives.

The crash was on the notoriously risky Interamerican highway, at kilometre 159, Guatemalan media said.

The crash is one of the worst traffic accidents in the country in recent years.

Guatemala, a Central American country of some 16.5 million people, has a poor road safety record and traffic rules are frequently ignored.
