The Tigers led 45-29 at the half, and by as many as 18 points before Yale mounted a late surge.

Mays scored 19 points, Tremont Waters added 15 points, Naz Reid scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds, Kavell Bigby-Williams tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds for his 10th double-double and LSU advanced to the NCAA Tournament's second round for the first time since 2009. The Tigers led the whole game, but Yale gave LSU a late scare with a furious rally that saw an 18-point lead trimmed to four.

Leading scorer Miye Oni was 2 of 16 shooting, including 1 of 10 from 3-point range, and had five points. Kavell Bigby-Williams had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Copeland, Trey Phills, Blake Reynolds and Thomas Ryans were freshmen on that team, although they did little to get Yale into the tourney.

North Florida band director Stephen Putnam wasn't sure why Yale's band didn't come to the tournament, but he assumed it was because the school is on spring break and couldn't get all its members together.

The No. 3 Tigers face No. 11 Belmont or No. 6 Maryland if they beat No. 14 Yale in the first round.
