NASA releases the final panorama that Opportunity took on Mars

NASA Opportunity rover’s last panorama shows its final resting place

NASA's Mars rover Opportunity leaves us with one final, glorious panorama

NASA tried gamely to revive the long-lived Oppy but had no luck, finally declaring the rover dead last month. To the left are tabular rocks, which tend to be thin and flat, and to the right are pitted rocks, which have compositions unlike any rocks previously seen during the mission.

This 360-degree panorama is composed of 354 images taken by the Opportunity rover's Panoramic Camera (Pancam) from May 13 through June 10, 2018, or sols (Martian days) 5,084 through 5,111.

"This final panorama embodies what made our Opportunity rover such a remarkable mission of exploration and discovery", said in a statement accompanying the photo Opportunity project manager John Callas. From the last picture taken by the vehicle, we can see that Opportunity latest moments were spent in Perseverance Valley located in Endurance Crater's western rim.

One important part of the mission was sharing images with the public as they came out-a practice that has now become standard for space agencies-and it has had a big impact on the way we conceive of Mars. Opportunity's scientific discoveries contributed to our unprecedented understanding of the planet's geology and environment, laying the groundwork for future robotic and human missions to the Red Planet.

It gives a view of the rim of the Endeavour Crater in the distance, rover tracks from Opportunity, and to the far right and left is the bottom of Perseverance Valley.

NASA's Opportunity rover provided one last stunning view of Mars before the space agency lost contact with it past year. Over almost 15 years, it traversed more than 28 miles of Red Planet before ultimately meeting its end during a planet-wide snowstorm last June.

'Just to the left of that, rover tracks begin their descent from over the horizon and weave their way down to geologic features that our scientists wanted to examine up close. NASA also produced a 3D-version of the panorama, viewable through blue-and-red 3D glasses. The images composing the panorama were taken over the course of 29 days. This meant that the rover did not have enough juice remaining to capture its final few images using the Pancam's green and violet filters.

This storm-which blanketed the entire planet-caused NASA to lose contact with the solar-powered rover. The dust storm hit before the rover could be able to do otherwise. "Now she can rest, beneath a thin layer of dust, knowing she did humanity proud".
