The plan, announced on Wednesday, comes a day after the German automaker warned it would cut jobs as it speeds up the rollout of electric cars, which are less complex to build and require fewer workers.

Indeed, even as certain positions are cut, supervisors hope to make 2,000 new occupations in hardware and programming improvement to shape the company's reorientation, and said they would maintain an employer stability ensure substantial until 2025. By comparison, Volkswagen's target is significantly higher and more ambitious than GM's goal of building 1 million electric vehicles each year by 2026. Volkswagen's chief executive officer, Herbert Diess, explained during the recently held Capital Market's Day that building fully-cars as opposed to electric and combustion drivetrains is a much more efficient approach.

VW will start building the ID at a factory in Zwickau, Germany, which has maximum annual production capacity of 330,000 models. The move will likely be a big gamble for the company, which is now suffering from strained revenues caused by high expenditure on electric drivetrain technologies. VW says the move will help ensure profitability as the company transitions to the electric and autonomous vehicle era.
