Chiefs to sign safety Tyrann Mathieu

Lions Reportedly Pursuing Free Agent Tyrann Mathieu

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Mathieu is expected to sign a three-year, $42 million contract.

It's never a good idea to count him out. Jackson had the best season of his career past year after moving from cornerback to safety. The moment the Kansas City Chiefs leaked word that they had signed Tyrann Mathieu to a deal in free agency, the response from analysts, fans, and even Chiefs players was overwhelmingly positive, as everyone was excited to add the free agent safety.

Unvaccinated Boy Spends 57 Days In The Hospital After Reported Tetanus Infection
It was all going well until the sixth day when the boy started experiencing muscle spasms along with the clenching of the jaw. The doctors noted that his hospital bill totaled $811,929, which is about 72 times the average hospital bill for children.

He comes at a considerable cost. While there is sure to be some contractual arm wrestling there - I can not imagine being able to sustain two of the five biggest cap hits in the league at one position, even if you deal Dee Ford and cut Justin Houston - and imagining those two in a defensive backfield together should be intimidating for even the division's most tenured quarterbacks.

But his addition could be the first step in returning some respectability to the Chiefs' defense. After Landon Collins got a deal that upended the safety market, bidding for Mathieu took off and the Chiefs eventually emerged victorious, though the final offers were similar. Mathieu will be only 29 when this contract expires. He played both strong safety and slot corner.

WR Jackson heading back to Eagles, per sources
What that means for Nelson Agholor remains to be seen, as the Eagles could decide to move on from his $9.5 million salary cap hit. His playing time was reduced in the second half of last season, but he's still an effective interior pass-rusher.

Despite missing at least two games in each of his first four National Football League seasons, Mathieu has played all 16 games in each of his last two. The Chiefs could also release Berry, but they've given no indication they're planning to do so and he costs them about the same amount against their salary cap whether he stays with them or goes.

It's no longer a necessity.
