STRONG winds and heavy downpours will affect much of Scotland ahead of the weekend, with transport disruption likely.

"Potentially damaging gusts may occur near Atlantic coasts towards dawn, with the threat of coastal flooding due to very high seas".

The warning for heavy rain is in place over the western and Highlands areas up until Saturday afternoon.

The Met Office has issued three yellow warnings for England, Scotland and Northern Ireland as Storm Erik prepares to hit on Friday.

An Orange wind warning is also in place for Co Donegal, valid until 6am tomorrow, while a Status Yellow wind warning is in place of the rest of the country until the same time.

Before then, exposed coasts of Northern Ireland could see gales of 70mph while heavy rain could lead to flooding in Scotland.

"A deep area of low pressure will bring windy and often wet weather across much of the United Kingdom on Friday and Saturday", said the Met Office.

The storm was named after Irish weather service Met Éireann.

"The worst of the wind is really through from the early hours of Saturday morning, but taking a while to ease out through the course of Saturday daytime".
