Earlier, Russian senator representing Karachay-Cherkess Republic Rauf Arashukov was arrested in the Federation Council on suspicion of implication in several murders.

Mr Arashukov is also thought to be involved in other crimes, the Investigative Committee of Russian Federation said on its website.

The United Russia branch in Karachai-Cherkessia said on January 30 that it suspended Arashukov's membership in the party, which dominates politics nationwide and is one of President Vladimir Putin's main levers of influence. Russian news website RBC past year quoted investigation sources as saying that three people testified against the lawmaker, accusing him of ordering the murder of a well-known local activist.
