He's accused of ordering two murders in 2010 in his home region of Karachayevo-Cherkessiya in Southern Russia, the Investigative Committee said in a statement.

Russia's senior prosecutor attended the plenary session and unexpectedly made the case for the arrest of 32-year-old Rauf Arashukov.

A Russian lawmaker suspected of involvement in two killings was detained on Wednesday at parliament in front of stunned members of the upper house after he tried to escape but was stopped by the speaker.

Earlier, Russian senator representing Karachay-Cherkess Republic Rauf Arashukov was arrested in the Federation Council on suspicion of implication in several murders.

Mr Arashukov is also thought to be involved in other crimes, the Investigative Committee of Russian Federation said on its website.

The United Russia branch in Karachai-Cherkessia said on January 30 that it suspended Arashukov's membership in the party, which dominates politics nationwide and is one of President Vladimir Putin's main levers of influence. Russian news website RBC past year quoted investigation sources as saying that three people testified against the lawmaker, accusing him of ordering the murder of a well-known local activist.

ICR Spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko said that Arashukov was detained as part of a criminal case of the creation of a crime organization, the theft of natural gas from PJSC Gazprom, the commission of two murders, and other crimes. Arashukov had reportedly tried to leave the assembly hall before Matvienko ordered him to "sit back down".

"That was a complete surprise to everyone including the suspect who was late for the session", Kalashnikov told the Interfax news agency.

The lawmaker, who became a senator in 2016, is also accused of "document fraud that allowed him to become a senator", Russian Federation media reports say.
