It seems like the Yankees could have gotten a bit more - even with the compensation pick they'll be getting from the Reds - considering Gray's team control, age and track record, even if he wasn't great in NY. As the Yankees would eventually lose to the Boston Red Sox in the ALDS 3-1, Gray was entering the offseason unsure of where he would pitch come 2019.
NY dealt Gray and minor league left-hander Reiver Sanmartin to Cincinnati for second-base prospect Shed Long and a high draft pick, then flipped Long to the Seattle Mariners for center-field prospect Josh Stowers.
Monday afternoon, the Mariners announced they had acquired infield prospect Shed Long from the Yankees in exchange for outfield prospect Josh Stowers. The new agreement reportedly added $30.5 million from 2020-22 onto Gray's current one-year deal. The Reds also have a club option for the 2023 season at $12 million.
The deal could max out at five years and $50 million. "To maximize his abilities, it would be more likely best [for him to be] somewhere else".
Petra Kvitova downs Danielle Collins to reach first Australian Open final
In the blink of an eye the second set was over as Kvitova dished out a bagel to end the match with 94 minutes on the clock. Although she won on 81 percent of her first serves, only 43 percent of her second serves got her games.
For Gray, the move is seen as a much-needed change of scenery, especially when word of the Yankees wanting to trade him got out. Gray was a vital piece of their rotation that series when he started Game 2 and also Game 5. He was dropped from the rotation in August and finished 15-16 with a 4.52 ERA overall for NY. Gray definitely was a road pitcher, pitching a respectable 3.62 ERA away from the Bronx. It's not out of the question that he'll be able to regain his form as a frontline starter during his time in Cincinnati.
Sonny Gray has managed only a 15-16 record since being traded to the Yankees in 2017.
Meanwhile, all three teams involved in Monday's transaction picked up a prospect.
Long is the No. 7 prospect in the Reds' organization as ranked by Baseball America, while Stowers was ranked 10th in the Mariners' organization. He's an undersized second baseman who has plenty of offensive upside.
Victor Oladipo ruptured quad: Pacers guard to miss rest of season
The 30-year-old dominated at both ends of the court, finishing with 23 points, 15 rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Oladipo went down while chasing Pascal Siakam on a Raptors fast break with four minutes to go in the second quarter.
Stowers, 21, was selected by Seattle in the second round with the 54th overall pick a year ago and signed for a $1.1 million bonus.
Of course, this trade is all about Gray going to the Reds and Cincinnati signing him for the long haul. But the primary goal of dealing Gray is to clear salary space and open a 40-man roster spot that will go to the recently signed Adam Ottavino. He's potentially a pitcher who can lead their rotation for the long-term.
For the Reds, it gives them an anchor at the top of their rotation moving forward.
