Bright skies tonight for what could be a spectacular lunar eclipse

Ireland to witness the most spectacular lunar eclipse for the next 14 years tomorrow

It is a type of lunar eclipse, during which the moon appears to glow red while seeming brighter and closer to earth than normal. While the moon won't turn red again for several years, there will be several partial lunar eclipses in 2019 and 2020.

A total lunar eclipse happens when the earth comes between the sun and the moon, covering the moon with its shadow.

The blood moon was clearly visible in Northland and many people got to see it, while some photographed it and others took a chance to have some fun images taken. The duration of the "totality" phase - when the moon ws completely engulfed in Earth's shadow - -was 62 minutes.

The rare convergence of these phenomenon enabled watchers in North and South America, parts of Europe and western Africa, who were lucky enough to have cloud-less skies, view the eclipse in its entirety. We'll also see solar eclipses, which occur when the moon passes in front of the sun from the Earth's perspective.

The full moon did not disappear entirely during the eclipse, turning into a shade of red instead.
