"I was the attorney general of California for two terms and I had a host of clients that I was obligated to defend and represent", Harris said at a press conference on Monday at her alma mater Howard University, Vox reported.

If elected, she would be the first woman, the first woman of Asian heritage and the first African-American woman as president.

Besides asking her about her platform, several of the reporters also probed Harris's background as a candidate from California and a former attorney general.

Harris's announcement comes about a week after New York Sen. Elizabeth Warren of MA, who announced an exploratory committee, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro.

But after her parents separated when she was about five years old, it was Kamala´s mother who raised her and her younger sister, Maya, who went on to become a lawyer and an advisor to Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential campaign.

In the weeks before the November elections, Harris made trips to Iowa and SC, both early-voting states.

She has argued that the needs of the middle class have been ignored, citing the federal shutdown over the President's "vanity project" - a border wall - as the latest example.

There is a strong desire for a woman or a person of colour (ideally both) to win the nomination on a proudly progressive policy platform. And then he took it to the lowest common denominator.
