A USA diocese has apologized and vowed to take action after videos emerged showing boys from a Catholic private school mocking an elderly Native American man at a rally in the capital Washington, triggering widespread criticism.

"Condemning the actions of the students towards Philips and Native Americans in general, they said, We extend our deepest apologies to Mr Philip". The two groups reportedly promised to "take appropriate action, up to and including expulsion". Phillips said he was subjected to racist slurs from the group during that incident.

Phillips was involved in a similar incident in 2015 where he claimed he was harassed by another group of students at a Native American themed party, Detroit's Fox2 reported at the time.

Frejo told the AP that while it seemed the students initially appeared to mock the Native Americans, once the situation defused he "was at peace singing among the scorn and he briefly felt something special happen as they repeatedly sang the [anthem from the Native American Movement]". "These are indigenous lands, we're not supposed to have walls", he said.

Iron Eyes called the students behavior "unfortunate and sad". "They were rambunctious and trying to instigate a conflict", he said.
