Canada granting asylum to Saudi teenager Rahaf al-Qunun: Trudeau

Saudi teen seeks asylum as Australian foreign minister visits Thailand – Thaiger Bites | The Thaiger

Rahaf al-Qunun has been granted asylum in Australia, Thai official says

Thailand's immigration police chief says a Saudi woman who fled alleged abuse by her family will leave Bangkok for Canada.

Saudi teen Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun is now staying in a Bangkok hotel under the care of the United Nation's refugee agency (UNHCR), which has been processing her application for refugee status ahead of possible resettlement in Australia.

"Canada has been unequivocal that we'll stand up for human rights and women's rights around the world", Trudeau said.

Alqunun's case has highlighted the cause of women's rights in Saudi Arabia. In some cases, a male's consent is also necessary to work.

The office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees welcomed Canada's decision.

Today though, Ms Alqunun's Twitter account appeared to have been deleted. A loose group of activists and friends bolstered her social media campaign using the hashtag #SaveRahaf and were able to successfully stave off deportation.

Thai immigration police chief Surachate Hakpan told reporters that Alqunun had refused to meet her father and brother who had flown to Bangkok, adding that they were returning home "disappointed".

An 18-year-old Saudi runaway who said she was abused and feared death if deported back home was expected to arrive Saturday in Canada, which has granted her asylum. In a video clip of the meeting released by Thai immigration police, Alsheaiby is heard telling Thai officials: "From the moment she arrived, she opened a new account and her followers reached nearly 45,000 in a day".

"It was a pleasure for me this morning to welcome to her new home a very courageous new Canadian", Freeland said.

Although her asylum case moved fast the final maneuvers that led to her flight to Canada remain largely a mystery.

"She chose Canada. Canada said it will accept her". Surachate said that police could not confiscate her phone because she was not being detained and said that the Saudi diplomat's remark was "just an opinion" and "nothing to be taken seriously".

Rahaf's quest also prompted online vitriol and death threats that made her deactivate her Twitter account after posting her last update.

Ms Alqunun later tweeted the video of that meeting and wrote that her "Twitter account has changed the game against what he wished for me".

She said she believed she was hours away from being forced on a flight back to Kuwait. "I'm now in real danger because the Saudi Embassy is trying to force me to return", said an English translation of one of her first posts to Twitter.

Because al-Qunun turned up in Thailand - which is not a signatory to the United Nations convention on refugees - settlement there was not an option, prompting the United Nations and other countries to step in.

Thailand is obliged under global law to ensure that she isn't forcibly sent to a place where she could be at risk of torture and other human rights violations, the NGO said.

It has served as a popular escape route for defecting North Koreans, who are generally sent to South Korea.

"At the time of the UNHCR's referral to Canada on January 11, the assessment of Ms Al-Qunun's case by Australian officials was progressing". He was traveling to the Southeast Asian country for his honeymoon when he was stopped.

Robertson said Thai authorities were spreading fake stories about Rahaf, citing one Thai immigration official's remark to CNN in which he said Rahaf was denied entry into Thailand because she didn't have the requisite documents.

"The Thai government is aware of the importance of this matter to Australia".
