Nonetheless, Masinga will forever be remembered as a true legend of the South African game, and Goal would like to offer our sincerest condolences to the Masinga family, friends as well as colleagues who have certainly been shocked by the death of an icon.

Buddha Mathathe‚ the president of the South African Masters and Legend Football Association‚ told TimesLIVE that Phil Masinga passed away at a Parktown hospital on Sunday morning after a long illness. He was in the team in 1992 when South Africa played its first game after being allowed back into global soccer.

He won 58 caps for South Africa, helping them win the African Nations Cup on home soil in 1996.
