Victorian man arrested for allegedly sending suspicious packages to embassies

Police suspect the substance in the packages was sourced from the man's home.

Police have not ruled out the existence of further hazardous parcels but Victoria's acting Premier Tim Pallas told reporters no state government departments had received questionable mail.

He was apprehended last night at his home, with images obtained by 9News showing police in hazmat gear assessing the suspect's home.

The Indian, New Zealand, South Korean, Swiss, Greek, French, Italian, Pakistani, Spanish and U.S. consulates in Melbourne and Canberra were among those targeted with suspicious packages on Wednesday.

DFAT said in a statement it had warned all diplomatic missions in Australia to be tired of opening mail on January 8, after learning that suspicious packages were sent to three embassies and consulates in Canberra and Sydney on January 7.

One official from Pakistan's consulate told the ABC she opened a suspicious envelope which appeared to contain asbestos in the morning and was "scared of what might happen".

He was charged with sending risky materials through the post.

"Police have identified all intended recipients and have put processes in place to recover the outstanding packages".

"There is no ongoing threat to the general public", police said.

It came two days after Sydney's Argentinian consulate was partially evacuated following reports of a suspicious substance.
