The special counsel alleged Manafort "lied about sharing polling data with Mr. Kilimnik related to the 2016 presidential campaign", according to the unredacted filing, and discussed Ukrainian politics with Kilimnik during that time.

The sections posted online also stated that Mueller's office believes that Manafort lied to prosecutors about his discussions with Kilimnik about a "Ukrainian peace plan" and a meeting that Manafort had with Kilimnik when they both were in Madrid. Six weeks after special counsel Robert Mueller's team announced that Manafort had lied to prosecutors after agreeing to cooperate with them, Manafort's attorneys filed an official response to Mueller's claims, arguing that Manafort "provided complete and truthful information to the best of his ability".

Paul Manafort had almost a month to respond to allegations that he lied to the Special Counsel's Office when he was supposed to be cooperating with them as part of his plea deal in his Washington, D.C. federal money laundering case.

Special counsel prosecutors accused Manafort in November of breaking a plea deal by lying to the special counsel's office. His lawyers also said prosecutors have not provided witness statements disputing Manafort's account.

In the document Manafort's lawyers referenced a December court filing in which Mueller alleged that Manafort had "conceded" to discussing the peace plan, which they argued was an indication that their client was forthcoming when his memory was refreshed of past events. Manafort allegedly shared the data while he was working on Donald Trump's Republican campaign.

The documents reveal that Manafort lied about sharing polling data for the 2016 presidential election with Kilimnik, and about meeting with the Russian in Madrid, during the campaign. They said Manafort was unclear on how the payment was recorded by his accountant.

Mr Kilimnik was considered Manafort's right-hand man in Ukraine and has been accused by the special counsel of conspiring to obstruct justice.

Manafort, who earned millions of dollars for his political consulting work for Ukraine's former pro-Russia government, has emerged as a key figure in Mueller's investigation. Manafort had told investigators he had no direct or indirect contact with White House officials since Trump's inauguration, but Manafort had been in touch with officials as recently as the spring, according to the filing.

His lawyers reminded the court that Manafort had been co-operative and had no motive to lie, having voluntarily offered his electronic devices and communications to the government.

Jackson has scheduled Manafort's sentencing for March 5, but the judge said she first wanted to determine whether he did breach the plea agreement.
