"A number of prominent news executives, including from The New York Times, have said that the president's words put the physical safety of journalists at risk". Khashoggi was one of 53 journalists killed between January 1 and December 14, 2018, the committee said.
In addition to retaliation killings, media workers have died in armed conflicts or on unsafe reporting assignments.

Almost 40% of those put to death in 2018 were convicted of drugs offences, and 77% of these were foreigners, who also made up half the number of people put to death. The 34 journalists murdered this year compares with 18 murders in 2017. Ten other journalists' deaths in 2018 were not included in the total, because they are still under investigation.
There are also some journalists who are being detained even after the court ordered them to be set free.
Between June 2017 and March 2018, the number of executions in Saudi Arabia reached 133, nearly twice as many as the 67 recorded in the eight months prior to the rise of the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The six Americans were among 80 journalists killed worldwide in what RSF Secretary-General Christophe Deloire called a critical situation for journalists around the globe. Sixty-three professional journalists were killed, and 49 of those deaths were targeted murders, according to the report.
Afghanistan was the most risky country for journalists, with 15 killed including AFP's Shah Marai, followed by Syria with 11 deaths and Mexico with nine.

The CPJ also noted the deaths of four reporters at the Capital Gazette newspaper in the U.S. state of Maryland. Gunman Jarrod Ramos shot and killed four journalists and one Capital Gazette employee.

Various reports have verified that some on the team were drawn from among the personal bodyguards of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, whom Khashoggi would repeatedly criticize before his murder. Turkish officials claim he was attacked and killed inside the consulate.
