US announces new set of Russia sanctions

The Treasury Department also announced Wednesday it is placing sanctions on 15 members of the GRU, a Russian military intelligence organization that attempted to interfere in the 2016 USA election and assassinate a former Russian spy in the United Kingdom.

Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, two GRU agents, who allegedly took part in the attempted assassination of Sergei Skripal in the United Kingdom, were also among the sanctioned.

The sanctions were announced against entities tied to "Project Lakhta", which Treasury said was part of an effort tied to the infamous Internet Research Agency and a slew of current and former members of the GRU, the Russian intelligence service, for trying to influence the 2016 United States presidential election. The nine officers have already been indicted in connection with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Congress can block the lifting of sanctions, otherwise, they will take effect in 30 days, the Treasury Department said in a statement Wednesday.
