Earlier, the United Nations under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, Mark Lowcock, on Sunday told Al Jazeera that the ceasefire brokered between pro-government forces and the Houthi rebels in Hodeidah must quickly be "translated into a real change on the ground".

An "immediate ceasefire" in Yemen's war will actually come into effect on 18 December, officials say, after the initial deal was followed by violence.

Although calm returned to Hodeida the next morning, a resident in the eastern part of the city told AFP on Saturday evening they could hear a continuous exchange of fire and artillery.

Griffiths has asked the Security Council to pass a resolution backing deployment of a robust monitoring regime to oversee compliance with the truce, headed by retired Dutch major-general Patrick Cammaert.

He added that "allowing the United Nations the lead role in the ports is the vital first step".

The Riyadh-backed side, which represented former Yemeni president Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi in the Stockholm talks, were forced to sit for talks with the Houthi Ansarullah movement after their massive operation to seize the port city of Hudaydah failed.
