The sky will be darker this year due to the new moon happening just a few days before the shower's peak. The stream will show last year's meteor shower until Thursday night.

According to NASA, watching the shower is pretty easy, provided you can get yourself somewhere really, really dark.

NASA says the best time to watch is after 10:30 p.m. overnight December 13 and December 14. Stargazers are encouraged to head over to the darkest spots outside and look up for a show of lights streaming across the sky.

Of course, that's all if you're in the countryside. Of course, optimal viewing conditions for a meteor shower include being somewhere far from light pollution and outdoors, which for some people just isn't an option.

As per NASA meteor expert, Bill Cooke, there can be as many as 100 meteors per hour shooting across the sky. Defined as the "best and most reliable" meteor shower of the year by NASA, the spectacular sky show is generated because of an asteroid named 3200 Phaethon.

"The cosmic dust may have resulted from a crash with another flying object, but there's little danger of any Geminids landing on Earth as it normally disintegrates in the Earth's atmosphere", Google representatives wrote.

The comet will make its closest approach to the Earth in the next 20 years by coming within seven million miles of the Earth.

The closest that the comet comes to the sun happened on December 12. And tonight's meteor shower is a great one to watch with family, as other meteor showers often begin in the wee hours of the morning. Don't use binoculars or a telescope either, that will only decrease your field of vision, whatever it may be.
