China Detains Former Canadian Diplomat After Arresting 100 Christians and Their Pastor

Canadian government officials were granted access to one of two Canadians being detained in China on Friday.

A statement from Global Affairs Canada says Canada's ambassador to China, John McCallum, met with former diplomat Michael Kovrig today in Beijing.

It was confirmed on Thursday that Michael Spavor, a businessman, had been detained in addition to former diplomat Michael Kovrig.

Michael Spavor, the second Canadian Ottawa says has gone missing in China, helped arrange some of National Basketball Association star Dennis Rodman's North Korea trips. She is free on bail in Vancouver, facing an extradition hearing to the U.S. That process could take years to play out. According to Reuters, a us security council is expected to approve the merger of T-Mobile and Sprint, on one condition - the combined carrier can't use networking equipment from Huawei.

Before the two Canadians' detention, China's Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng had warned Ottawa that it would face "grave consequences" if it did not release Meng, fuelling suspicion that the recent arrests were punitive in nature.

"There's still very good demand for Canadian wood in China", said Kevin Mason, managing director of Vancouver-based ERA Forest Products Research.

Chrystia Freeland, Canada's foreign minister, quickly appeared to take aim at Trump's comments.

Leigh Griffiths to take time away from football
Leigh Griffiths is taking an indefinite break from football to deal with what are believed to be gambling issues. Rodgers added: "He's reached a point where it's a struggle for him".

Foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang addressed the matter on Thursday, saying the pair were "suspected of engaging in activities that threatened China's national security" and had been put under "compulsory measures", a usual reference to custody.

It was more than coincidental that a few weeks earlier Canada had arrested and subsequently extradited to the U.S. a Chinese national and Canadian permanent resident, Su Bin, who was accused of conspiracy to steal United States military secrets by hacking into protected websites.

Canadian officials were working hard to ascertain Spavor's whereabouts and would continue to raise the issue with the Chinese government, Bérubé said.

Some China analysts were in little doubt about the reason for the detentions.

China called the US ambassador to make a formal protest over the issue.

"We're going to get every citizen unlawfully detained all around the world returned to the country to which they have the right to go back to", Pompeo added.

It is also a headache for Beijing, as it provides a location for Christian missionaries of various creeds and nationalities who assist North Koreans to escape their country, and join the "underground railway" which leads through China to Southeast Asia or South Korea.

Stargazers are encouraged to head over to the darkest spots outside and look up for a show of lights streaming across the sky. The comet will make its closest approach to the Earth in the next 20 years by coming within seven million miles of the Earth.

We have expressed that concern directly to Chinese authorities and we are in direct personal contact with his family. Spavor is a North Korean fixer who has met with Kim Jong Un, and who ran tours in North Korea, for clients including USA basketball icon Dennis Rodman. "He truly loves North Korea and the North Korean people, and was someone who believed passionately in engagement rather than disengagement", he continued.

Other photographs taken at the time showed Spavor laughing and shaking hands with Kim Jong Un, and in February, he was given a front-row seat to a military parade that reportedly was off-limits to foreign media.

He was arrested on 10 December.

It was reported widely on Friday that Canadian consular staff in China had been granted access to Kovrig in detention.

Checks by Reuters news agency did not turn up a registration for ICG on government databases for NGOs or social enterprises.

The shift is significant because, so far, German officials have said they see no legal basis to exclude any vendors from the buildout of fifth-generation networks in response to warnings from Washington that Huawei's networks were not safe. She will have to stay in Vancouver and its suburbs and confine herself to one of her two Vancouver homes from 11pm to 6am.

Meng was released on Can$10 million (US$7.5 million) bail by a court in Vancouver on Tuesday pending a USA extradition hearing.
