Baby born prematurely after West Bank shooting dies

The attack took place near the site of a drive-by shooting on Sunday that wounded seven Israelis, including a pregnant woman whose baby was delivered prematurely and later died.

Clashes broke out in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Thursday after the Israeli army entered the city hunting for a Palestinian gunman who killed two soldiers at a bus stop. An army spokesperson was unable to confirm reports that the assailant had targeted Israeli soldiers.

The attacker, a 26-year-old Palestinian from the West Bank, was shot dead by the officers.

Although Hamas's power base is in Gaza it also poses a grassroots challenge to Abbas in the West Bank, where its ability to operate is hampered by the presence of both Abbas's forces and of Israeli troops. The IDF believes that the attacker then fled the scene by vehicle, driving somewhere near Ramallah.

Earlier in the day, a Palestinian man was shot dead by Israeli police officers after a knife attack in Jerusalem's Old City in the early hours of December 13, according to Haaretz.

The name and condition of the attacker are still unknown, he is reportedly a Palestinian.

The two Israelis were employees of the recycling company where Naalwa worked.

"It is a part of the new initiative of (Hamas) that chose to open a new front in the West Bank after a period of time that they got to the conclusion they will ease down their efforts from the Gaza Strip", Barak Ben-Zur said. Their identities were not immediately known.

Around 600,000 Israelis now live in settlements there considered illegal by the worldwide community.

For his part, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to legalise thousands of Jewish settlement homes in the occupied West Bank that were built without Israeli permits.

"We lost a few hours ago a newborn baby, four days old", Netanyahu said in an address to foreign media.
