The organisers of the Oscars are searching for a new host after the comedian who had accepted the job a few days ago announced that he was stepping down over homophobic remarks he had made on Twitter. The turn of events followed outcry over previous anti-gay tweets, and comments Hart made during stand-up routines almost 10 years ago.

His dismissal was lamented by GLAAD, the gay and lesbian campaign group, which said it had hoped that his "evolving" mindset might have become a "teachable moment" broadcast to millions.

GLAAD previously tweeted that the LGBTQ media advocacy organization had reached out to ABC, the Academy, and Hart's management "to discuss Kevin's anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and record as well as opportunities for positive LGBTQ inclusion on the Oscars stage".
