Former rugby player Chris Dawson arrested in cold case made famous by podcast

Former Sydney teacher Chris Dawson has been arrested over the 1982 murder of his wife, Lyn.

The podcast on the case, Teacher's Pet, has had millions of downloads and recently won The Australian's Hedley Thomas and Slade Gibson a Gold Walkley.

Dawson, a Newtown rugby league player in the early 1970s, has always been a suspect in the case but denies any involvement in his wife's disappearance.

The police chief added: "What is important to me was justice for Lynette Dawson and her family, and today is an important step forward in that".

Police said two fresh witness statements led to the 70-year-old's arrest on the Gold Coast, with officers saying Mr Dawson was "a bit taken back" when he was arrested at his home.

The magistrate has denied Dawson's bail plea, turning him over to NSW Police where he will face Parramatta Local Court tomorrow.

Dawson is a former first grade rugby league player turned high school teacher.

It was revealed that Chris Dawson went "quietly" with police following his arrest this morning, and that no new evidence was found during the September dig at the Bayview property.

NSW police have stated they are comfortable with the strength of the case against Dawson despite not finding the body of Lyn.

After his wife's disappearance he moved one of his 16-year-old pupils into his house and they would later marry.

He had his head in his hands as the magistrate read out the police case, including allegations of domestic violence against his wife.

Since Lynette's disappearance, Dawson claimed she had run away to life with a religious cult in a remote area of NSW.

Lyn's brother Gregg Simms said he was "quite emotional" when he heard of Mr Dawson's arrest this morning.

It comes after detectives from the Homicide Squad's Unsolved Homicide Unit established Strike Force Scriven in 2015 to re-investigate the circumstances surrounding Lynette's disappearance and suspected murder.

"There is clear and uncontested evidence that Lyn Dawson was alive long after she left Chris and their daughters", they said in a statement.

Police said Dawson was due to be extradited from Queensland to New South Wales, where he would be charged with homicide.

Following extensive investigations, detectives requested the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions review their brief of evidence in April this year.

Earlier this week, the ODPP provided advice to police, and following further inquiries, detectives applied for an arrest warrant before travelling to Queensland.
