"Search and rescue operations continue for U.S. Marine aircraft that were involved in a mishap off of the coast of Japan around 2:00 a.m. December 6.", a Marine Corps news release said.

The Marine Corps tweeted that the incident occurred at about 02:00 on Thursday (17:00 GMT Wednesday). Two aviators were on the F/A-18 Hornet, while five Marines were on the KC-130.

It was unclear if United States military officials were also assisting with the search.
