Paul Sherwen: Former British road race champion & TV commentator dies

Paul Sherwen, SBS Tour de France broadcaster and former cyclist, dies aged 62

Former British road race champion Paul Sherwen has died at the age of 62.

After making his Tour de France debut in 1978 - when the 22-year-old finished 70th on general classification, the highest he ever placed in the race - the Widnes-born rider switched over to La Redoute in 1979 with whom he made a further six appearances at la grande boucle.

Sherwen called the Tour de France for decades on SBS alongside Phil Liggett, with his sudden death sending shockwaves around the cycling world.

Au moins cinq personnes ont été interpellées, rapporte le journal L'indépendant qui montre des images impressionnantes. Pendant plusieurs heures, quelques dizaines de casseurs ont incendié tout ce qui se trouvait sur leur passage.

The cause of Sherwen's death is not yet known.

But it was as part of SBS's cycling coverage - not just of the Tour de France but also the Tour Down Under - that Sherwen became a much-respected and loved figure within Australian cycling, beginning with the network's first Tour coverage in 1991.

SBS presenter Michael Tomalaris said he was a "true gentleman" while cyclist Robbie McEwen said he was deeply saddened. He was joined in the booth for many of those events by co-commentator Phil Liggett.

This was our last time together in July this year. An absolute gentleman - I knew him for over 20 years & listened to him & Phil for nearly 30. "Always generous with his time, I learnt plenty working alongside him", McEwen tweeted.

We're heartbroken to hear the news of Paul Sherwen's passing overnight.

Lance Armstrong, who won the Tour seven times before being stripped of his championships amid a major doping scandal, wrote about meeting Sherwen in 1992, when he worked as a press officer for Team Motorola. My deepest condolences go out to his family.
