Macron Moves to Ease Tensions With Trump on European Defense

President Donald Trump, a leader who has proudly declared himself a "nationalist" and advocated an "America First" approach, joined dozens of other world leaders Sunday at a ceremony focused on global cooperation to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

He made the call during Sunday's remembrance ceremony in Paris to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the first World War.

The historic moment was commemorated in a somber and rain-soaked ceremony led by French President Emmanuel Macron at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Sunday morning.

"Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism", Macron continued. By putting our own interests first, with no regard for others, we erase the very thing that a nation holds dearest, and the thing that keeps it alive: its moral values.

The leaders arrived a few minutes late, missing the exact moment - 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918 - that four years of fighting ended. Putin, who was last to arrive at the ceremony, gave Trump a brief thumb's up as he greeted them.

"Though sadly he did not make it, he was among the countless young men who never returned home, but through their sacrifice, they ascended to peace in heaven", President Trump said.

Publicly, the Kremlin has played down the possible absence of a sit-down with Trump, saying the two leaders will have time for talks in a few weeks at the Group of 20 summit in Buenos Aires.

Macron's comments on stronger European defense cooperation were not meant to add to the points of contention, and his stance is not new.

President Paul Kagame is in Paris, France where he is attending the inaugural Peace Forum. But without the leader of the world's only remaining superpower, the forum will lose some of its sense.

"The aim of the forum is to show that there are lots of forces in the worldwide system - states, NGOs, foundations, intellectuals, companies - who believe we need a world of rules, an open world and a multilateral world", chief organiser Justin Vaisse told AFP.

The German leader made the comments at the peace conference, which France hopes will become an annual gathering to promote peace, multilateralism and global cooperation.

With Trump and other leaders looking on, Macron warned against the dangers of nationalism and said the "ancient demons" that caused World War I and millions of deaths are growing stronger.

Trump thanked Macron in a tweet for the "beautiful ceremony" before heading to the U.S. military cemetery at Suresnes, west of Paris to pay tribute to America's war dead.

"The American and French patriots of World War I embody the timeless virtues of our two republics: honor and courage; strength and valor; love and loyalty; grace and glory", Trump said.

The U.S. leader was heavily criticized for cancelling a trip to Belleau Wood battlefield in northern France on Saturday due to the rain, with some critics accusing him of disrespecting America's war dead.

She also criticised the idea of isolationism, which she said "wasn't the right solution more than 100 years ago".
