A gunman killed 12 people including a sheriff's deputy after he walked into a Southern California bar and started shooting late on Wednesday night, police said.

Sheriff Sgt. Ron Helus, the first officer to enter the Borderline Bar & Grill, was met by deadly gunfire, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said during a news conference.

A sheriff's deputy, Sgt. Ron Helus, arrived at the scene with a California Highway Patrol officer and was shot multiple times, according to the AP.

Authorities said he was about a year from retirement. Helus died while being treated at an area hospital several hours after he was shot, Dean said. He gave his all.

"I don't know how to console or what to say to the other people who are going to go through the same thing as I am". They found Long "somewhat irate, acting a little irrationally", Dean said.

One witness said she saw the gunman shoot three people before she dove to the floor.
