It's been built in conjunction with Hancock and Lane Racing, plus the help of a dozen students from Bothell High School near Seattle. eCOPO testing is said to be ongoing.

General Motors has revealed the eCOPO Camaro, an all-electric drag racing concept that will be on display in Las Vegas at SEMA. From there, it ripped out the V8 engine and dropped in a specially prepared electric motor built from a pair of BorgWarner HVH 250-150 motor assemblies. Those packs are mounted inside the vehicle in a manner to give it optimal weight distribution.

The official added that verbal orders went out this past weekend to some units and additional written orders are starting Monday. The troops are legally barred from enforcing U.S. immigration law and are instead providing support to border officials.

Chevy's eCOPO Camaro Concept can run the quarter mile in the 9-second range; the auto was developed by GM and built in partnership with an electric drag racing team called Hancock and Lane Racing. Its 800-volt system will make for some fast charging, which is helpful at a drag strip, where the action never really slows down. In drag racing, this can be quite an advantage.

The eCOPO has an electric motor generating more than 700hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. It has the same bell house mounting pattern and crankshaft flange as the popular LS-family engines, allowing it to work with virtually any GM transmission. The pack includes four 200-volt modules, each of which weighs about 175 pounds. For racing, engineers have surrounded them with crash structures and roll cages and added a battery-management system to continually monitor their condition.

Although GM is planning to offer 20 electric cars by 2023, it isn't putting the eCOPO on sale, but hints that a crate electric motor kit like it has could be offered in the coming years.

"The possibilities are intriguing and suggest a whole new world for racers", said Russ O'Blenes, GM's head of performance variants, parts, and motorsports, in a statement.

Prototype eCOPO Camaro, equipped with a power unit 710 forces and 813 Nm of torque, debuted at the SEMA tuning show. Chevy says that it is "exploring" the option of an electric crate motor for sale in the future.
