The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment other than fluids, the CDC says.

Lab evidence points to raw chicken being the source of contamination, and people are reporting eating different types and brands of chicken products purchased from different locations.

The CDC has called the rise in infections from antibiotic-resistant bacteria "a global threat", saying at least 23,000 people die yearly and 2 million become infected in the USA alone. The CDC has indicated there have been more hospitalizations with this outbreak than what is typically seen.

In order to avoid being sick, the CDC says to wash your hands before working with food. Cook chicken to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit to kill harmful bacteria. Leftovers should also be cooked to 165°F.

Health officials say the outbreak should serve as a reminder to always cook raw chicken carefully and thoroughly, as it may contain germs can that spread around food prep areas and make people sick.
